Wе аrе getting married іn a barn courtyard. ( area between a bunch οf οld barns) Wіth ουr reception іn a large gοrgеουѕ barn. Mοѕt invitations i hаνе looked аt аrе tο ” classy” fοr ουr wedding. Nοt thаt аrе wedding wont bе super pretty. Jυѕt nοt іn thе ribbon аnd lace way. Anу іdеаѕ, ουr main color іѕ medium yellow.
Ummm.. maybe cream colored paper with those grainy, stringy things on it (do you know what I’m talking about?) and “organic” colors like your yellow, green, etc.
Get a pack of goldleaf paper from any office supply store.
Burn the edges all around to make it non-uniform and darkened.
mis-spell things on the inside in a comical way
Dress it up with a leather boot lace type strap wrapped around it and fastened to a clunky button to keep it “closed”
Deliver it on horseback. ha ha, kidding, on the front put what looks like official pony express delivery markings.
mine look like this:

I’d make the invitations yourself.
Maybe try a yellow plaid background with your white or off-white invitation paper on top, with a classic, rustic font on the invitation (try dafont.com for free fonts) in a color you find legible, but keeping with the feel of your wedding. Perhaps a darker, brownish yellow would do.
If you don’t care for the DIY idea, take your thoughts to a local printer, and ask what they can do. Most will certainly help you make your invitations just how you want them
Since most weddings are classy, why not try making the invites your self? It would add a personal touch to your wedding!
- Have the invitations on paper that looks like it has been crinkled up or tear/burn the edges some. Or you could always go with a plaid background. Plaid always makes me think of farming and barns.
- Have a bow around the invitation. The bow can be made from burlap material or plaid ribbon.
- Use images like barns, maple leaves, fences, stables, etc. on the front or inside of the invitations.
- Use organic paper to make the invitations out of.
- Try a floral or scenery background on your invitations.
- Tie a bow around the card with this type of material: http://www.invitesite.com/include/Products/Images/IMG/ORLAKIT_IMG_1.jpg
- Use darker colors that compliment your yellow. Try oranges, browns, cremes, and dark reds.
The best thing to do is to talk to a good graphic designer who will create the invitations that will be just what you want. Don’t know a designer? If you live in a city with a college, there should be an art department who can direct you to a good designer. Othewise, a good printer can introduce you to a designer.
The graphic designer will work with you to create the invitations of your dreams. Money well spent, too.
I did a search for “informal outdoor wedding invitation” and found this:

I would go with something like this:

You could change the color of the paper to yellow.
Anything that includes an element of nature would work perfectly with your setting. There are lots of simple, beautiful invitations that dont have ribbons and lace (yuck). Good luck!

Hi and congratulations!
If if was me, I would simply go with something casual. You don’t really need to make it “rustic” unless you really want to. Here are some casual ones in yellow (along with some other colors on the invite also). I like the casual vibe you get with these:

Remember that if you like a certain invite, you can always change the font from a fancy font to a more plain one, which looks much less fancy and more casual.
I would imagine something organic made out of recycled paper. You know how some invitations have a folded piece of paper with another sheet of paper attached being held on by a ribbon. You could do that, but tie a piece of raffia to look like barn hay.. I would be tempted to go out to the barn and take some abstract photos of the barn structure–the doors, the windows, the inside loft, distance shots, close up shots, lots of shots. Then, select one to be on the front fold of the invitation and then use a piece of velum tied over the printed picture with the written invitation in letters that does not have a fancy font. There are plenty of web sites where you can design your own invitations.
